"It needs gas," said the technician

An AC gas refill in Mumbai is listed at ₹2,749 by one booking site as of 4 November 2026, but because refrigerant sits in a sealed system, a unit that is low usually has a leak, and that leak should be found and repaired first.

From The AC in Your Flat. Updated 4 November 2026.

Refrigerant isn't fuel. It goes round a closed circuit and doesn't get used up. Voltas says it is sealed within the system. So when gas is low, it has usually gone somewhere.

Why does a leak matter more than the top-up?

A top-up on a leaking unit is a payment for gas that will escape again. The US Environmental Protection Agency tells homeowners to ask technicians to locate and repair leaks rather than top off a leaking system, to cut emissions, repeat visits and repair costs. That's US advice, but the physics is the same.

How much does an AC gas refill cost?

One published price we checked is from a booking site: NoBroker's Mumbai page, checked on 4 November 2026, lists ₹2,749 for AC capacities from 1 to 2.5 ton and says the visit includes an inspection. It's a listing and not a recommendation, and repair of a leak can cost more. Authorised service centres may price differently. No Indian authority sets this price, so ask for a written quote. The same search will show lower and higher figures from other sites.

What should the technician do?

Ask for a leak check first, the reason for the shortfall, the gas type on your unit's nameplate and the amount added. Daikin India's manuals say to use only the refrigerant shown on the outdoor unit. Business Today warns against fake or unauthorised refrigerants.

What if you suspect a refrigerant leak?

Open the windows, keep flames away, switch the AC off at the MCB and call a technician. Daikin India's manuals say to ventilate if refrigerant leaks and warn that toxic gas may form if it touches fire. Voltas says direct exposure can displace oxygen and irritate the lungs. If someone feels unwell, get them to fresh air and call a doctor. A smell of cooking gas is a different emergency: don't work any switch, close the cylinder or supply valve if you can, open windows and follow your gas supplier's emergency advice.

Never buy a can and try this yourself. Gas work, gauges and hoses are for trained technicians only.

What to do

Yours to do

  • Ask for a leak check before agreeing to any gas.
  • Ask for the type and amount in writing, and keep the bill.
  • Ventilate and switch off at the MCB if you suspect a refrigerant leak.

Leave to the trained person

  • All refrigerant work: finding leaks, repairing, evacuating and charging.

Also asked

How often does an AC need gas?

On a sealed system without a leak, there's no fixed schedule. Be wary of anyone who sells it as a routine yearly item.

How do I know if the gas is low?

You can't tell from the room. Weak cooling can come from many causes, including a dirty filter, and Daikin lists leaking refrigerant as one. A technician has to measure.
