Inverter or fixed speed

Inverter vs non inverter comes down to hours of use: an inverter AC varies its compressor speed and usually uses less power over long hours, while a fixed-speed unit simply switches on and off, and may still suit a room used only briefly.

From The AC in Your Flat. Updated 4 November 2026.

A fixed-speed compressor runs flat out or not at all. An inverter changes speed to hold the set temperature. Onida describes the inverter circuit as converting mains power and driving the compressor at variable speed.

How common are inverter ACs now?

They've become the normal choice. The Ministry of Power's May 2023 release says the inverter share of the Indian market rose from about 1 per cent to 77 per cent between 2015-16 and 2022-23, and fixed speed fell from 99 to 23 per cent.

How much does an inverter save?

There's no one figure. Onida's maker blog says inverters use 30 to 50 per cent less power, and that is a seller's claim. Use the label instead: both types carry an ISEER and yearly units since the rating covers both. Compare two units of the same capacity.

Is a fixed-speed AC ever the better choice?

It might be, for a guest room or a room you cool for short spells, if the price gap is large and the label is sound. The fair test is what you'll pay over its life, given your hours and tariff. We aren't comparing brands here. See the star label story for that sum.

Is an inverter harder to repair?

It has more electronics. We found no Indian figures on repair costs by type to report. Ask about the warranty on the control board and the compressor, and what happens after it ends. Voltage questions are in the stabiliser story.

What to do

Yours to do

  • Estimate your hours a year for that room.
  • Compare ISEER and yearly units for the same capacity.
  • Read what the warranty says about the board and compressor.

Leave to the trained person

  • Advice on your wiring and any model-specific fitting needs.

Also asked

Does inverter need a separate stabiliser?

Often not, according to makers, but it depends on your voltage and the model's stated range. See stabilisers and power cuts.

Does an inverter cool faster?

Makers often claim it. We haven't seen Indian test data from outside the makers to report, so check capacity and reviews from a source you trust.
