Cleaning the filters yourself
Clean split AC filters about every two weeks while the AC is in daily use, with the power off, and let them dry fully in the shade before they go back.
From The AC in Your Flat. Updated 4 November 2026.
A filter is a plastic frame with a fine mesh, and it sits behind the front panel where you can lift it out by hand. When it clogs, less air gets through and the unit uses more electricity to cool the room. Daikin's global maintenance page recommends a clean once every two weeks. In a flat near a busy road or a building site, look sooner.
How do you clean a split AC filter?
Switch off with the remote, then turn off the power. LG India's filter video says to switch off and unplug. If your unit has no plug you can reach, use its MCB. Leave the power off from now until the panel is shut again.
Stand on something sturdy, not a chair on wheels or a plastic stool. Raise the front panel, hold the filter's tab and ease it down and out. Designs vary, so check your manual if it resists.

What should you not do?
Do not spray anything into the coil behind the filter. Daikin warns against shop-bought cleaning sprays, which can harm the parts inside and in the worst case lead to water leaks. Do not comb the fins, take off the fan or open the side covers. A torn filter is a replacement job; LG sends you to its service centre for one.

What to do
Yours to do
- Turn the power off first and keep it off until the panel is closed.
- Clean every two weeks in season, and look at the filter sooner in a dusty spell.
- Dry the filter in the shade and refit it only when fully dry.
Leave to the trained person
- Coil cleaning, fan cleaning and anything behind a screwed-on cover.
- A filter that is torn or will not seat properly.
Also asked
Does a clean filter really change the bill?
It helps. Daikin says a blocked filter raises the electricity needed to cool the room, but gives no figure, and we would not trust a precise one. Your own bill before and after a clean is the fairest test.
What if my AC has a self-clean button?
Daikin says to use the automatic function on models that have one. Check your manual for what that button does. On many units it dries the inside, which is a different job from washing the mesh.
